Faith in Film

Greetings Brothers & Sisters of the Divine Logos! I recently watched Oliver's brilliant short film on Saint Cuthbert (on his channel), and it got me thinking about other works that directly or indirectly contemplate the metanarrative of our Lord, His walk, our faith, His grace, our salvation.

As doubtless all here know, Peterson and Pageau discuss how well-told stories can't help but contend with the Metanarrative even if not in an overt fashion, while others evoke it implicitly (e.g., The Chronicles of Narnia), and others still quite literally. For me, some of the most powerful films are the ones which linger with a kind of dissonance, much the same way difficult passages of scripture often do... leaving us to wrestle with God as a we reflect upon them (apropos to Dr. Peterson's book having just come out)!

Below is my list (which could go on an on, but herein limited to 10 films, listed alphabetically).

  1. A Hidden Life (2019)

  2. Andrei Rublev (1966)

  3. Beyond the Gates [aka Shooting Dogs] (2005)

  4. Cast Away* (2000)

  5. Gravity* (2013)

  6. Groundhog Day* (1993)

  7. Silence (2016)

  8. The Mission (1986)

  9. The Passion of the Christ (2004)

  10. The Tree of Life (2011)

And please share your own films that speak to you and your faith! I'm so eager to hear.

*You may find some of these titles to be curious additions for a list like this, but about a decade ago, I came across a YouTube channel, Logos Made Flesh, from a believer here in the States named Matt. Sadly, he passed away from cancer two years ago this December, but on his channel he discussed Biblical truths discernable in the least likely of places; Groundhog Day as the book of Ecclesiastes, for example. Gravity was not on Matt's list, but it's a film which to me is rich in visual symbolism (particularly rebirth), the downtrodden soul's yearning for God, and the beauty and grace found in even the shortest of prayers of thanks given.

And I third it!

Big fan of that and also The Tree of Life. I’ve been meaning to watch The Mission for a long time. Have had it on my shelf for ages, but having two kids under 3 has seriously eaten into my cinema time.
