I found this talk so fruitful! Growing up in an evangelical Christian home, I had really missed out on the more sacred, enchanting, metaphysical aspects of Christmas (as found so richly within high church traditions). I did, however, once do a project on the Christmas tree in elementary school as part of my class' "Christmas Around the World" wherein I was assigned Germany.
One of the tidbits I learned for the project was the custom of waiting to decorate/light the tree until December 24th (even having it be part of the Christmas day surprise on some occasions). But it wasn't until this discussion on the potency and symbolic richness of the encroaching darkness to underscore our necessity for The Light that I came to better under the catharsis (for lack of a better word) in our waiting season.
It's almost akin to fasting wherein our joy in the ultimate relief and deliverance of food (or as with the darkness, the coming of The Light) do we find ourselves being filled up all the more!
